EVALUATION - Question 4 - Group Activity

4) How would it be distributed as a real media text?

First of all you have to decide what sort of film you have created.

Is it a interesting art house movie that would attract a niche audience?

Is it a mainstream blockbuster?

Is it a straight to DVD/Netflix movie?

Different types of film get distributed in different kind of ways:

Blockbusters - will already have a major distributor, get a big marketing push followed by a global release date, followed by DVD and online release 3 to 4 months later.

Smaller films - will have to find a distributor so will be screened at various film festivals to showcase their product. Hopefully it will pick some critical acclaim and awards which lead to a distribution deal.

Something else - have you any interesting ideas for your film? Could you release it straight online? Or release in on BitTorrent?

WHATEVER YOU DO YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT YOUR PRODUCT AND HOW IT WILL REACH YOUR AUDIENCE.

To answer this question have a read of this: What is a film distributor

Look at this article and this one for advice.

Then do the following:

1) Choose a strategy (including release date) and develop it.

2) If appropriate choose a distribution company (look for distributors of similar films).

3) Decide on a release date and explain why.
