CREATIVE PLANNING FOR PRODUCTION

//STEP 1//
Write up all your ideas. Go through each one and discuss the potential positives and negatives.
MAKE SURE YOU RECORD THE PROCESS AND GET IT UP ON YOUR BLOG.

//STEP 2//
Make notes on the following and record what you think on the blog - share the posts if necessary.
a) TREATMENT – explain what you intend to make
Sub genre
Characters
Narrative
Setting
Tone
Atmosphere

b) INFLUENCES
(What other media products have influenced you in your ideas and why?)

c) HOW WILL YOU PRESENT THE CREDITS?

//STEP 3//
Make a short video explaining what you intend to do using post it notes.
a) Write down what you want to say
b) Record yourself saying it
c) Draw/write on post-it notes to illustrate your point
d) Record yourself turning over the post-it notes while listening to the recording.
e) Put the original recording underneath the final video in post-production

What to do with your titles?

Use effects to have them as part of the narrative world.

Use in camera effects and props to make them part of the narrative world.

Or a thematic abstract stand alone credit sequence

Do you need explicit narrative or establish the place and tone of the film?

Do you build representations?

Monday 14th November tasks

Composing music

Watch this video about Hans Zimmer, the composer of the Dark Knight
soundtrack discussing the creation of the Joker’s Theme

What was Hans Zimmers intention when making this soundtrack? (0.30 for clues)

What qualities did Hans Zimmer want the music to have (try and find at
least three)?

How do you feel about the final score and explain why you feel it
work/doesn’t work.

Evaluate what you have learned from this task and how it might impact
on choices made when coming to create your own soundtrack.

Saul Bass
Write this up as a blog post - embed the first two videos as well so the examiner knows what documentary you're responding to.

1) Write a 100-150 biography of Saul Bass, explaining what he did and why he is so important.

Look herehere or here for information

2) Watch the following clips and answer the questions below.

What were credits sequences like before Saul Bass?
Why does Kyle Cooper believe the Vertigo credit sequence is so effective?
Pick out at least 3 things Saul Bass attempted to do with his credits sequence (e.g. set the tone of the film)
What is his greatest advice to any graphic design students and why?

And just for fun here's some other opening sequence videos that might be interesting to watch.

THRILLER FILM - YOUR OWN CHOICE (HOMEWORK)

Choose your own Thriller film - deconstruct and analyse it in the following.

Genre
Apply the Thriller conventions checklist to your film. How conventional is the film?

What other elements and sub genres does the film comprise of?

Narrative
Apply the narrative theories (or at least one) to you film.
How does the film manipulate the narrative to create suspense?
Is that narrative structure conventional?

Representations
Analyse how the antagonist and protagonist are represented. How does the film use the micro-elements to create these representations.
